  • 建除十二神 The twelve officers

A cycle of twelve day types, from 建 Establish to 闭 Close, set by the day branch against the month. Each officer suits some kinds of activity more than others.

  • 宜 and 忌

What the almanac lists as favoured and avoided for the day. They are the same for everyone; whether a day suits you depends on your own chart.

  • 冲 and 煞

A day clashes the animal six branches away from its own, so people whose day or year branch is that animal treat it as a watch-out. 煞 names the direction the almanac advises against facing that day.

  • 节气 Solar terms

Twenty-four astronomical points that divide the solar year. Twelve of them, the Jie, start the BaZi months; Li Chun starts the year.

  • 农历 Lunar dates

The moon-based calendar used for festivals such as Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn. It runs alongside the solar terms but does not set the pillars.

See them at work on any almanac day page, and why the year turns at Li Chun. How Auspica works them out. New to BaZi? Start with What is BaZi?, or find your Day Master.
