What Tai Sui is

太岁 Tai Sui is the presiding influence of the year in the Chinese almanac. It moves through the twelve branches, one a year, in a twelve-year cycle that began as a counterpart to the orbit of Jupiter. In 2027 it sits in 未, the branch of the Goat.

Tradition pictures the Tai Sui of each year as a general who presides over it. An animal whose branch meets the year branch in one of five ways is said to meet Tai Sui.

The animals that meet Tai Sui in 2027

Birth years count from Li Chun. Someone born in January or early February may belong to the year before, so check the animal page before reading anything into it.

Every other animal is unmarked or supported. The Rabbit, the Horse and the Pig meet 未 in combination or harmony.

What the tradition says

Meeting Tai Sui is read as a watch-out, not a verdict. The advice is about how to act in the year, not about avoiding it.

• 值太岁
  The year of your own animal, your 本命年, is read as a year to pace rather than push.
• 冲太岁
  A clash is a year of movement: a change of place, role or routine, better chosen than waited for.
• 刑太岁
  A punishment asks for decisions rather than endurance, and choosing early keeps it manageable.
• 害太岁
  Harm is the quiet one: small frictions and unsaid expectations, easier when they are named early.
• 破太岁
  Destruction shakes loose arrangements that were holding on out of habit. Not all of that is a loss.

Many people visit a temple near the start of the year to pay their respects to Tai Sui, a custom called 拜太岁 or 安太岁. Some go at Chinese New Year and some at Li Chun. It is a custom of respect, and families keep it in their own way.

Tai Sui in the home

In Feng Shui, Tai Sui has a direction as well as a branch. In 2027 it sits in 未, in the southwest, from 202.5 to 217.5 degrees.

The traditional advice is not to dig or start heavy renovation in that sector during the year, and not to sit facing it for long. The Year Breaker, 岁破, sits opposite in 丑, in the northeast, from 22.5 to 37.5 degrees, and the same care applies there.

The Tai Sui of 2027 takes over at Li Chun, on 4 February 2027 at 09:46 UTC+8. Some temples mark the change at Chinese New Year, 6 February 2027. A BaZi chart counts the year from Li Chun.
